NFT Marketing Module 8: Building a community (and our list of top Twitter feeds and Discord servers)

Unless there is an existing community that is substantial enough to launch the project – and even if there is – building the community is difficult work.  Creators need to dedicate enough time to find collaborators that already have a community, attend NFT-related events and conferences and use social media to build the group that is excited about the project and willing to invest.

Conferences and meetups are important. Don’t be afraid to use Meetup to host your own, as well as show up to others. It’s important however, to have a way to capture contact information from other attendees if it is not your own event, so have your business card/link/qr code and set some goals for recontact people.  Be sure to offer something to them as well.

A single collaborator can get your project off the ground if you can capture a joint community that is already build.

Social media also plays a role. For most  projects, Discord, Twitter, and Instagram are the fundamental social media channels.

Discord is no longer just for gamers but attracting that special slice of the audience that is more focused on Fintech projects. Top agencies such as Coinbound.io, focus all their media including Twitter, on driving people to the Discord group and to the white lists.

Here is one discussion on the issue from 2021:

Every project is slightly different.  While Discord is the mainstay for finding buyers, Lewna Tsuki of FooCuties found that Twitter was the most powerful channel to build a following quickly to promote FooCuties.  She started with what she calls “CryptoTwitter,” researching the groups around keywords, and finding groups and people to follow.

This research surfaced important information. One of the communities she followed, the  XRP community on Twitter, was passionate about NFTs and she saw that 10 people are very well known because they exposed scams and recommended valid projects.

She followed these influencers.  Some had forms to fill out, so she did that too, then messaged them and asked them to let her know if they had questions about FooCuties’ legitimacy.  Soon they promoted her project and even shared her launch dates. More followers arrived. This strategy was largely responsible for generating 5300 followers in about a week and a half. Nice work!

Another strategy she uses is simply to post comments on celebrity blogs; while they probably won’t respond these people have huge groups of engaged followers who did respond, follow, and reTweet.

To create a Twitter strategy, start with a list of accounts to follow, from your research on similar projects, an a list of NFT Marketplaces (you’ll find them in this channel).

Discord servers  to join

Always start with the Discord communities for the marketplace you have selected.

However, there are also numerous NFT discord servers where your project can get traction.

While driving the community, you can also “feed the community” at Discord or elsewhere with members-only airdrops of special NFTs on a couple of holidays if it makes sense for your project.

One more best practice is to ask other projects that are just ahead of yours, to promote your project to their group, in return for posting their next project. We’ll discuss this at more length in “Finding collaborators.”
